JEE (Joint Entrance Examinations) is the gateway to engineering institutes in India. It is divided into two parts, first being JEE Mains for admission in NITs and other colleges and second being, JEE Advanced for admission in the prestigious IITs. Students are supposed to clear the first round i.e. JEE Mains cutoff in order to attempt the second round i.e. JEE Advanced.
As many as 9.65 lakhs students gave JEE this year. One of the most important questions which come in student’s mind while preparing for JEE is that is NCERT enough to crack JEE?
How many questions come from NCERT?
Many questions from NCERT directly comes in JEE. It is really important for students to study NCERT properly. NCERT is like a bible. It must be thoroughly read and understood by all the students who are aiming for the exams.
Many a times questions are picked from paragraphs in random from NCERT, so students should not hamper their any chance to get good marks. The summary given at the end of every chapter in NCERT is very useful as it sums up the chapter well and acts as a good revision pre exam.
NCERT Maths enough for JEE Preparations?
The idea to crack Maths in JEE is to practice as many as problems as possible. More the variety, better it will be for JEE. This is one of the major reasons why Maths NCERT is not enough for JEE preparations. But it is very important to study maths from NCERT to get good marks in class 12th boards as most of the questions in CBSE boards come directly from NCERT textbook. Maths questions are more analytical and require time management and practice. Most of topics in JEE Maths syllabus go beyond the NCERT texts and hence to score good marks, it is much required to do Maths from other reference books. But once in a blue moon, questions do come directly from NCERT in JEE and hence, studying Maths NCERT is a must.
NCERT Physics enough for JEE Preparations?
Physics questions are usually the trickiest in JEE. Their base is from NCERT physics textbook but they need full conceptual knowledge and its application to solve the questions, which sometimes gets difficult for the students to understand directly from NCERT. In the past, there have been questions asked in JEE which were solely based on NCERT. One must keep in mind to read ‘Points to Ponder’ section at least once as questions have also come from these end parts of the chapter.
NCERT Chemistry enough for JEE Preparations?
In case of chemistry, around 60 to 70 percent of questions come on the based on the texts of NCERT. Number of NCERT questions are the highest in Organic Chemistry. However, it is advisable to use other reference books to study Inorganic Chemistry as it is easier to grasp the concepts in better way and further read it once from NCERT. Similarly, in physical chemistry read the topics in other reference books followed by NCERT. Make sure to understand the topics well so that you can apply these concepts in various applications. All the reactions and mechanisms from NCERT must be thoroughly learnt. In short, All the chapters of Chemistry must be read as they are a requirement to crack the exams and can’t be skipped off.
Important Topics to cover in JEE Mains & Advanced
Had I been in your place, I would have gone in the following manner. It is really important to prepare the exam by topics as they carry more weightage. At least have 2 strong areas out of 3 subjects if you want to crack JEE Advanced. It would be great if you are strong in all the 3 domains of the exam.

Study Plan
Study plan often differ from person to person as there are various learning styles. I have given a brief idea how one should form their plan for iit jee.
Steps to follow: –
- Revision – It is very important to revise as many as times possible as we tend to forget the little details which might come in paper.
- Solved Problems- Start with solved problems to ease up the concepts.
- Pre Reading – Pre Reading before teacher or tutor teaches a topic is very beneficial. This leads to crystal clear understanding.
- Study Materials- Make sure to complete all the modules prescribed by your coaching centre or the list of self-study books and attempt all the questions. Don’t have backlogs.
- Previous Year Questions – Practice all the questions, especially the marked ones. It’s good to buy 10-year solved question bank of the exam.
- Self-Introspection- Every evening, evaluate your day performance whether you were able to complete the assigned topics. If not, modify the study plan or start investing more time.
- Analysis- Analyze your mistakes and don’t repeat them.
- Consistency is very important if you want to clear the JEE. Work hard every day and do not procrastinate.
Tips for Preparation
- Focus on your study. It doesn’t matter how much time are you consuming as long as you finish the topic.
- Read only relevant material. You don’t have much time. Study wisely. Focus on the quality rather than quantity.
- Make a study plan and follow it consistently.
- Give as many mock tests as you can because time management is really important to ace the JEE advanced as well as mains.
- Revise, Revise and Revise. There is no substitute to hard work. Focus on revising the equations and mechanisms from chemistry from time to time.
- Don’t take NCERT lightly. Both JEE mains and class 12 exam papers are set by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). NCERT books for jee main are requirement. Study it thoroughly. Also go through NCERT ‘Exemplar Problem’ book.
- Make self-notes and flash cards. Helps in recalling information.
- Do not leave any topic during preparation.
- Attempt at least 70 to 80 percent of question papers if you want to score high. Aim for 270 or more.
- Relax well before exam and don’t rush through while writing paper. Breathe in and breathe out.
- Eat well. Sleep well.
Reference Books
You can refer from the following books. However, I recommend to study as per your coaching institute as it is impossible to study and complete all the books in mere two years. These books cover all the topics needed for the preparation of the jee exams.
