NTSE 2019 Syllabus – Latest Syllabus and Exam Pattern for Stage 1 & 2

The NCERT (National Council for Educational Research and Training) conducts the NTSE (National Talent Search Examination) every year. The exam is for class 10th students. The NTSE exam Syllabus is based on the NCERT syllabus for class 9th and 10th. The in-depth knowledge of NTSE syllabus is necessary to kick-start the preparation. The main objective of NCERT to conduct NTSE exam is to bring qualitative improvement in school education throughout the country. The scholars of the exam are provided with a scholarship throughout their graduation process (based on the field they choose).

NTSE consists of two sets of the exam that are Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The SAT also includes the language test of the paper. The exam comprises of 90 MCQ’s, with no negative marking for wrong answers.

NTSE Stage 1 Eligibility Criteria

The candidate should be studying in class 10. The candidate should be a student of any recognised school. The candidate should be a recognised citizen of India. He must have scored an aggregate of 60% in class 9 exam. And for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/PH there is a relaxation of 5%. The students belonging to this category should score an aggregate of 55% or above.

NTSE Stage 2 Eligibility Criteria

The candidates who secured at least 80% marks in NTSE stage 1 exam can appear for NTSE Stage 2 national level exam. All the candidates who achieve requisite scores at this level get qualified automatically for scholarships given by NCERT.

Exam Pattern (MAT and SAT)

Every multiple choice question in the exam consists of four options, out of which only one option is correct. For every correct answer the student is awarded 1 marks. There is no negative marking in any of the NTSE papers. The total score is equal to number of correct answers given by the candidate.

Mental Ability Test (MAT)

The Mental Ability Test syllabus for NTSE mainly tests the candidates ability of evaluation, spatial orientation, reasoning, space orientation, discrimination etc. Questions related to topics like analogy, ranking and Arrangement, distance & direction, blood relation, word problems etc. are asked to check the overall capabilities of the candidate.

This part of paper includes a set of 90 multiple choice questions. The other part of the paper is Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)

This part of the paper includes questions from different subjects like, physics, chemistry, maths, biology, history, geography and civics. SAT also comprises of a language test whose marks are not included in total results but are taken for qualifying purpose.

This set can have different types of questions such as match the correct answer, true and false, multiple choice questions, comprehension passage and arrange the sequence. To score great in Scholastic Aptitude Test a student needs and overall activeness and grasp over the complete syllabus. As the course for this part is vast, students make a large amount of mistakes in this section.

Language Test

The ability and the capability of the student in English language is tested through language test. The students must have strong basics of grammar to cope up with this section. NTSE Syllabus contains topics like sentence completion, synonyms, antonyms etc. are asked. The questions are based on evaluation, interpretation, logical sequencing and other components of language are asked in descriptive manner.
